Mark Zuckerberg’s favorite word is “public.” In Meta’s recent Q4 earnings call, he said, “On Facebook and Instagram, there are hundreds of billions of publicly shared images and tens of billions of public videos, which we estimate is greater than the Common Crawl dataset and people share large numbers of public text posts in comments across our services as well.”

Here’s what that means. Instead of using the Common Crawl dataset to train Meta’s AI like ChatGPT, it’s using your and my public data. And because it’s public (there’s that word again), they don’t have to get our permission or pay us for it. Nice.

Sorry, your smartwatch isn’t as accurate as you think https://www.komando.com/gadgets/bad-smartwatch-medical-advice/894029/ Sun, 04 Feb 2024 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.komando.com/gadgets/bad-smartwatch-medical-advice/894029/

Sensors in today’s smartwatches can detect your heartbeat, track how you sleep and even monitor blood oxygen levels. If Apple gets its way, your watch will be able to track your blood sugar (and possibly send reports about it to your doctor).

If you’ve ever wondered, “Just how accurate are these smartwatch readings?” You’re far from alone, so I took a look. Smartwatches and fitness watches have some serious flaws you should know about.

Even if your iPhone dies, it can still do these 3 things https://www.komando.com/gadgets/iphone-dead-battery-functions/839353/ Sat, 03 Feb 2024 11:00:00 +0000 https://www.komando.com/?p=839353

Your mobile phone is a lifeline to many daily activities. It is often the first thing we reach for in the mornings to check social media or pour over the latest news with a cup of coffee. It also keeps us in touch with family and friends.

So, when you forget to charge your iPhone overnight and it dies unceremoniously at lunchtime, you might feel lost or incomplete. Luckily, it doesn’t mean that all the functions are dead. There are a couple of handy features on your iPhone that still work.

Worst things to ask Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant https://www.komando.com/security-privacy/worst-things-to-ask-smart-assistants/900340/ Thu, 01 Feb 2024 14:00:00 +0000 https://www.komando.com/?p=900340

I use Siri to send texts, put my phone on Do Not Disturb before I record, set meetings and lots more. One time I don’t use it? In an emergency. Luckily, emergencies are few and far between in my life (knock on wood), but I wouldn’t risk it.

Researchers asked voice assistants questions related to cardiac arrest emergencies. Yep, it was a complete disaster. You might think a quick “Hey, Siri” would pull up the instructions quickly and clearly, but that’s absolutely the worst thing to do.

How to use AI to cut down on legal fees https://www.komando.com/technology/use-ai-to-cut-down-on-legal-fees/900294/ Wed, 31 Jan 2024 14:00:00 +0000 https://www.komando.com/?p=900294

As a small-business owner, dealing with attorneys means one thing: Spending a lot of money. I’ll never forget the lawyer I met with who charged $999 an hour. I wish I made that!

There’s a lot you need a real-life lawyer for, but there’s a lot you can do on your own with AI before opening your wallet.

Clever way to block online ads and stay safe https://www.komando.com/lifestyle/block-online-ads/900315/ Tue, 30 Jan 2024 14:00:00 +0000

I hate when ads take over websites. They pop up and distract you. So frustrating when all you want to do is read an article. Then, there’s the other big problem. All these website ads follow you around on different sites to track you.

But ads aren’t just annoying — they’re dangerous. Cybercriminals use them to spread malware, adware, spyware and everything in between.

Sky-high car insurance rates? Blame it on all the tech in our cars https://www.komando.com/money/sky-high-car-insurance/900430/ Tue, 30 Jan 2024 00:00:00 +0000

My car insurance just went up 32%. Did I have an accident or get a few tickets? Nope. Since 2020, car insurance rates in the U.S. have risen by a whopping 37%. The main reason? High-tech vehicles — aka anything remotely new — cost way more to repair. And you don’t need to have a high-tech car to feel the pinch. It’s hitting everyone.

Driving up costs

Our cars are packed with dozens of sensors and endless lines of computer code. Combine that with the rising cost of replacement parts and repairs, and voila, soaring auto insurance rates.

Sick of spaghetti? How to get out of your cooking rut https://www.komando.com/lifestyle/ai-cooking-ideas/900253/ Sat, 27 Jan 2024 14:00:00 +0000 https://www.komando.com/?p=900253

I admit it. Whenever I look for a recipe online, I get annoyed that I have to scroll, scroll, scroll. Listen, I know your grandma had the best chocolate chip cookies, and chicken soup healed your soul back in 1997. I just want the recipe.

Bright idea: Copy the recipe’s URL into Just The Recipe to strip away the junk. It’ll give you just the ingredients and steps you need. Even easier: On a PC, hit Ctrl + F and type “Print” to go right to the recipe. On a Mac, it’s Command + F.

Think of AI as a digital Swiss Army Knife. It’s sharp, versatile and surprisingly handy. It sounds overwhelming if you’ve never tried ChatGPT, Bard or any other big options. Trust me when I say if you can use Google, you can use AI.

Ditch the “too techy” excuses, and let’s get hands-on with this game-changer. I’ve got ideas for small business owners, students, parents, those looking for love online and more.

Out of this world: Data backups are headed to the moon https://www.komando.com/technology/moon-data-backup/899881/ Fri, 19 Jan 2024 14:00:00 +0000 https://www.komando.com/?p=899881

Where’s the safest place to store data? If you said “the cloud,” go a little higher. Nope, higher than that.

The ultimate backup is literally out of this world. I recently chatted with Chris Stott, CEO of a Florida-based startup called Lonestar. Alongside NASA, Lonestar is about to send backup servers to the moon. This is so fascinating to me, and I thought you’d like to hear more about it, too.

OK, it’s really cold: 11 tricks and gadgets to keep you warm https://www.komando.com/lifestyle/tricks-and-gadgets-to-keep-warm/899929/ Thu, 18 Jan 2024 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.komando.com/?p=899929

Yesterday, my Daily Tech Update heard on 350+ radio stations about how EVs don’t like cold weather hit home with a ton of folks. You see, even if you charged up to prepare the night before, the battery could be dead or pretty close to it when you wake up. Wow, so many people told me they had no idea this would happen when they bought an EV.

Yeah, it’s cold all across the country — Babbitt, Minnesota: -15°, Dubuque, Iowa: 3°, Sioux Falls, South Dakota: 6° and Chicago, Illinois: 10°. I’m freezing in Phoenix, where it’s 53° as I type, and I have a space heater on under my desk. (Insert wha-wha sound here!)

From self-parking to color-changing, what’s new in cars https://www.komando.com/technology/whats-new-in-cars/899867/ Sun, 14 Jan 2024 03:00:00 +0000 https://www.komando.com/?p=899867&preview=true&preview_id=899867

If you’ve listened to my show or read my newsletter for a while, you know I’m a car gal. There really isn’t much rhyme or reason to my car collection; you might see me rolling around in my 1946 Chevy truck, 1964-1/2 Mustang or 2015 gull-wing SLS Mercedes. My daily ride is my G-Wagon.

I always pay special attention to the automotive tech at CES. Sure, this year’s show in Vegas revealed flying taxis and Honda’s DMC DeLorean clone. But let’s check out some of the tech coming to our cars sooner rather than later. I’m talking about things like:

Criminals are using AI and clever tactics to scare parents into paying ransom https://www.komando.com/money/ways-to-catch-cyber-kidnappers/899707/ Sat, 13 Jan 2024 14:00:00 +0000 https://www.komando.com/?p=899707

Picture this: Your phone rings and it’s a familiar number. You answer and an unsettling voice tells you they have your kid. The only way to get your son or daughter back alive is to send money.

It gets worse. Your child gets on the phone and directly pleads with you for help. You see a picture of them in chains. You watch a video of them crying. Now you’re panicking.

CES 2024: AI binoculars, smarter locks, glare-free TVs and lots more https://www.komando.com/technology/cool-ces-tech-2024/899759/ Wed, 10 Jan 2024 01:00:00 +0000 https://www.komando.com/?p=899759

I’m always astounded by the number of people who go to the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. This year, over 130,000 attendees and 4,000 exhibitors are descending upon the city. CES used to be the least profitable week in Vegas for casinos since no one was gambling … but it was still the biggest week for prostitution. Go figure.

Here are a few items that have caught my attention at this year’s CES — for better or worse.

Inside Perplexity AI, the search chatbot that could beat Google https://www.komando.com/technology/inside-perplexity-ai/899648/ Mon, 08 Jan 2024 14:00:00 +0000 https://www.komando.com/?p=899648

For years now, I’ve predicted that someday, somehow, someone would create a search tool that would rival Google. Some say it’s already happened with ChatGPT. But it’s loaded with problems.

I’m betting that history is about to repeat itself with a small AI search website with only 40 employees operating out of a small shared office in San Francisco … kinda like the early days of Google.

Win the house-hunting game with foreclosure-finding apps https://www.komando.com/money-tips/foreclosure-finding-apps/899477/ Sat, 06 Jan 2024 14:00:00 +0000

In my spare time, I am a bit of a horse trader in real estate. I have purchased and sold over 20 commercial buildings and homes at all price points. I’ve used realtors and sold properties myself. I’ve bought foreclosures and short sales. I’ve remodeled homes and purchased spec homes. I just completed building a new home on a lot that I eyeballed for 10 years. It’s my hobby.

I’ve been thinking there is a looming collapse of the Airbnb and Vrbo model. Desperate owners will need to get rid of pricey investment properties they can’t afford anymore. Why? Hotels have lowered prices, and people are tired of the hidden cameras and lack of amenities in many Airbnbs.

Before you use the Flip app, know these downsides https://www.komando.com/technology/downsides-of-the-flip-app/899354/ Fri, 05 Jan 2024 14:00:00 +0000 https://www.komando.com/?p=899354

Savvy internet surfers like us ignore those obnoxious “Claim Now” pop-up ads that promise free gift cards. We’re better than that. But there’s a new shopping app that I have been getting a slew of questions about whether it’s a good way to make some extra cash. So, I decided to check it out for you.

See you on the Flip side

It’s called Flip. Make an account and you can purchase products. Once you get whatever you bought, you can earn money for making a review in a TikTok-style video. Flip pays you when people buy products based on your reviews or if you refer someone to the app. You can use the credits to buy more stuff on Flip or transfer the cash to a bank account.

Is your car revealing your location? https://www.komando.com/security-privacy/stalkers-tracking-your-car/899542/ Fri, 05 Jan 2024 12:00:00 +0000 https://www.komando.com/?p=899542

Remember when AirTags first came out? It didn’t take long before creeps started using them to track people. Victims were finding them in their bags, jackets and on their cars, you name it.

Apple finally made changes so that you’ll get an alert if someone is tracking you without your knowledge. Tracking cuts both ways. Yes, the tech got safer — but more people realized how easy it is to follow someone secretly.
